What Happens at Your First Dermatology Appointment?
If you’ve never visited a dermatology clinic before, it’s normal to have questions. Whether you’re coming in for acne, a rash, a skin exam, or cosmetic concerns, your first visit is focused on understanding your skin and creating a clear plan.
1. Check-In & Medical History
You’ll review your medical history, medications, allergies, and specific skin concerns. This helps your provider understand your overall health and tailor recommendations.
2. Discussion of Your Concern
You’ll talk through when the issue started, any changes you’ve noticed, symptoms, and treatments you’ve tried. Clear communication guides the evaluation.
3. Skin Examination
Depending on your reason for visiting, your provider may examine a specific area or perform a full-body skin check. Most exams are visual and noninvasive.
4. Diagnosis & Treatment Plan
After the evaluation, you’ll discuss next steps. This may include prescriptions, topical treatments, in-office procedures, or monitoring over time. Cosmetic options may also be reviewed if relevant.
5. Procedures (If Needed)
Some minor procedures, such as biopsies or cryotherapy, may be done the same day. Others may be scheduled later.
6. Follow-Up
Before leaving, you may schedule follow-up care if needed. Ongoing monitoring helps maintain healthy skin.
